New Zealand:
Elder Abuse and Neglect:
Exploration of Risk and Protective Factors
(January 2008)

This New Zealand Families Commission project explores elder abuse and neglect from the perspectives of elderly people, service providers and representatives of non-governmental organizations. Researchers investigate what sets off increases in the risk of abuse and neglect and what can be done to prevent it.

May 5th (2008 English calender this year) is Mother's Day in Nepal especially for Hindu (Matha tirtha Aunci). On this day all go to see their Mother with some gift like clothes and goods as Mother's choice. When people are old they hope their sons and daughtere will come to see them. Elder people are most happy when receiving gifts form their bottom of the heart. Attached is a picture of a 90 year old women. She is very happy to be honored by her son in law, daughter and her elder sister's son and family. If one has no Mother they go to holy place called Mata tirtha (8 km west from Kathmandu) and they bath in the river and pray for their late Mother's good carnation. Also, some people go to the ageing home and give fruits and sweets in their late Mother's memory.

• A Great Loss: INPEA Remembers Dr. Francisco Gullien "A Great Geriatrician"
  
  INPEA's global family wishes to extend our sincere regret upon learning of the loss of Dr. Gullien, former President of the Spanish Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics, and former Secretary of the IAGG-ER, described by friends in Spain as an "active Geriatrician." Dr. Lia Daichman recounts that "Paco was one of the first to support INPEA...he will be missed around the globe." "He was an excellent colleague," recalls Gloria Gutman, IAGG Past President. Colleague, Astrid Stuckelberger noted. "...he was ... cherished by all.. who met him...." INPEA believes his memory will remain so cherished, and offers our sympathy to his friends and family.

December 2007

• INPEA submits written statement to UN Human Rights Council 6th Session, Geneva. (Statement attached) Joint parallel event on "Government's Responsibility to Older Persons" held Dec 12th.
  
  
• INPEA welcomes our new UN NGO Representatives to Geneva.
  
  
• INPEA joins the UN Conference on NGO's (CONGO). Secretary General Somers represented INPEA at CONGO General Assembly in Geneva.
  
  
• Dr. Lia Daichman, INPEA President, to represent Argentina, and INPEA at UN Regional Meeting in Brazilia, on the five year follow up to the implementation of MIPAA.

VI European Congress of IAGG, 5-8 July, Saint Petersburg, Russia.
INPEA President Lia Daichman, MD, and Ariela Lowenstein, Ph.D., INPEA Regional Representative, Europe hosted the INPEA EUROPEAN MEMBERSHIP MEETING on Saturday, July 7th, and the first INPEA SYMPOSIUM held at this important meeting. INPEA's European colleagues shared their scientific and clinical knowledge with others working in Elder Abuse Prevention at this extraordinary event.
